All traffic across the bridge was halted Monday. On Wednesday, a nearby dam partially burst after Norway’s largest river spilled over and broke through the structure. Downstream communities had been evacuated and no casualties were reported. I have to admit, I was sad to lose Kyatchi, the Japanese restaurant that opened a second location in Lowertown St. Paul in 2017, only to close after the pandemic.Saying goodbye seems to be a common occurrence over the past few months as many restaurants deal with rising labor, real estate and food costs, but I’m happy to say hello to Erta Ale, the Ethiopian restaurant that took Kyatchi’s place. The vegetarian platter at Erta Ale, the new Ethiopian restaurant in Lowertown St. Paul. (Jess Fleming / Pioneer Press)The space has been changed slightly — the open kitchen/sushi assembly area has been drywalled in, which surprisingly makes the restaurant seem less crowded, and tables have been reconfigured slightly. There is new artwork, but also a few giant televisions, which were used to play (not too loud) music while were there. Much like Kyatchi, Erta Ale’s atmosphere is warm and inviting. The restaurant just got its beer and wine license, and they are serving several local beers on...
