Before arriving in Geneva for a renowned piano competition, Ukrainian pianist Roman Lopatynskyi (pictured) rehearsed in the dark and played concerts by candlelight as air raid sirens resounded across his native Kyiv. The 29-year-old is participating in the International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz, which is being held outside Ukraine for the first time since its inception in 1995 due to the Russian invasion. In his fourth appearance at the competition, which concludes on 21 April, Lopatynskyi hopes to give his nation a reason to be proud."If everything works out...it will be a definite victory for Ukraine on the cultural front," he said as he rehearsed in the basement of the Geneva Conservatory on Friday. As a male of military age, Lopatynskyi requires permission to leave the country for competitions and concerts abroad. Dear Amy: My wife of 57 years had a lover in her youth.I have asked her for some details about that affair, but she refuses to disclose anything.Should I accept that stance on her part or should she comply with my request?Just the Facts!Dear Just the Facts! You don’t say why you are so curious about this very long-ago love affair – at this stage in your own life.My reaction is that your wife is her own person. She has the right to disclose – or withhold – anything from her own past that precedes your relationship, unless this has a direct bearing on your own family (for instance, if she had a child by that relationship). This also applies to your own past, by the way.In my opinion, your curiosity doesn’t qualify as a “need-to-know.”If this has become a sticking point in your own relationship, then you will both have to reckon with it, thoughtfully talk it through, and make a conscious choice to move forward.Dear Amy: I have a beautiful, smart and wonderful 16-year-old granddaughter ...Harriette Cole: I’m terrified of seeing my brother because of his dogs

DEAR HARRIETTE: My brother has a lot of dogs, and I am afraid of them.I am going to his city soon and want to be able to spend some time with him. I should also mention that he is a homebody. In order for me to see him, I have to go to his house.I am petrified of the idea of going there when his dogs are around. I am especially afraid to spend the night there, although that’s what I used to do whenever I visited him in the past. How can I get over my fear? Or what else can I do if I want to see my brother?Afraid of DogsDEAR AFRAID OF DOGS: You and your brother both have fears. You are afraid of his dogs, and it sounds like he is afraid to venture out. You have always acquiesced to him. Perhaps it’s time for that to stop — at least in part.Related ArticlesAdvice | Harriette Cole: I never asked him to solve my problems but he won’t back off Advice | Harriette Cole: How do I tell him we’ll never be housemates?
