Palm Springs was incorporated April 20, 1938 and is celebrating its 85th birthday through the month of April. While the desert city and its culinary scene have grown exponentially since then, there are still plenty of restaurants in the greater Palm Springs area that offer that old school elegance and service. If you’re burned out on the oversaturation of the Tulum decor fad, here’s where to go when you have a yen for escargot, sinful souffles, white tablecloths, tableside Steak Diane and a little super club action.Located in the heart of Palm Springs at the base of the mountains, the 1940’s former Cary Grant guesthouse has been converted into Copley’s Restaurant. The chic and rustic cottage is famous for its romantic patio setting and charming little bar. Husband and wife team Andrew and Juliana Copley have created a stunning atmosphere and fresh menu with items that include a smoked duck and charred asparagus salad with organic quinoa, crushed avocado, red radish, green apple, mic...

Rachel Stamp Recalls Prince Genius:David Ryder Prangley of Brit glam-punks Rachel Stamp told us about his Prince experience.David Ryder Prangley: Planet Earth is 4.5 billion years old and I was lucky enough to be alive at the same time the greatest performer in human history was tearing up stages from Syracuse to Sydney. I am, of course, talking about the mighty Prince.I grew up in a small village in South Wales and had been a fan of His Royal Badness since ‘When Doves Cry’ hit the UK charts back in the golden year of 1984 but it wasn’t until he came to Wembley Arena in London, England in 1990 that I got to see him with my own eyes. Prince had not long ago released the ‘Batman’ album and was heading out on the NUDE tour, which was essentially a ‘greatest hits’ show. The arena was decked out with yellow and purple balloons and when the lights went down my mind was blown. Prince made his entrance on top of the stage left PA column, backlit as he sang ‘The Future’. Everybody went nuts ...

SOFTBALLNo. 5 Archbishop Mitty 8, Carondelet 0What’s better than one perfect game? How about two perfect games? One day after freshman Kyleigh Mace crafted her six-inning gem against Sacred Heart Cathedral, teammate Ava Markert followed up by sitting down 18 consecutive Carondelet batters. . Archbishop Mitty’s senior ace, who has now allowed four earned runs across 31.1 innings pitched this season, was untouchable in the Monarch’s 8-0 victory on Thursday night.Markert’s great performance did not shock Mitty coach Megan Yocke. “She’s kept us in a lot of games a lot longer than we’d like,” Yocke said. “So it’s not a surprise, and I’m happy for her that she broke through and got the perfect game.”Markert struck out six on 57 pitches, starring in a matchup that was far closer than the final score indicated.“We don’t have the experience we had last year,” Yocke said of her talented but young team’s tendency to start slow. “I think it’s about feeling it out and learning.”M...

Express lane critics detail their frustrations: Roadshow

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:35:47 GMT

Q: Toll and express lane signage is a mess on Interstates 880 and 680. Recently I drove from San Jose to Richmond and back on 880, with a passenger in the car. I was busy watching traffic and trying to read the signs. The passenger, also a licensed driver, read signs and helped me interpret them. My FasTrak Flex was set to 2.After that drive, I have no idea if I have tolls to pay, and if so, how much, or whether I violated rules and will be charged a penalty. Signs say HOV is 3+ occupancy. They do not say whether a non-HOV car can drive in express lanes at some toll rate, or is not allowed. Tolls are posted on lighted signs at intervals, but some are out. No signs mention whether the toll is for HOV only or for non-HOV, also. The only way to be sure of not violating some rule is to stay out of the express lanes completely. This whole scheme penalizes poor people and serves those who are wealthy enough not to care about charges, overcharges, or penalties.Marilyn Sander, CampbellA: If...

SAN FRANCISCO — There was no way to know, all the way back in 2000, when Lynn and Mike Crawford transferred their season tickets from Candlestick to the Giants’ brand-new waterfront ballpark, that they were securing front-row seats to watch their son live out his wildest dreams.Brandon Crawford was 13.On Friday, his parents will take their seats in the first row down the third base line, and they’ll watch him take his position at shortstop again, for the 1,531st time in his career, for the 12th consecutive year in the Giants’ home opener, wondering more vividly than ever how many more are left.Crawford, 36, has started more games at shortstop than anyone in Giants history and logged more games exclusively at the position than all but two players in MLB history (Luis Aparicio and Ozzie Smith). It is what he set out to do since he was 5 years old. But time comes for everyone, and it almost came for Crawford this past offseason. His contract is up after this season an...

Is Santa Clara County planning a big hospital purchase?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:35:47 GMT

With difficult economic pressures and increased caseloads straining its ability to care for patients in the post-COVID era, Santa Clara County is considering expanding its healthcare system by purchasing another area hospital.Since the beginning of the year, county supervisors have been meeting behind closed doors to discuss a proposed health care facility — though no details have been made public. And in February, the county signed a $3 million contract with a New York-based investment banking firm that specializes in hospital acquisitions and evaluations. The company, Cain Brothers, is the same one that helped the county in 2019 when it assumed ownership of O’Connor Hospital in San Jose and Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy for $235 million. Both were owned by a nonprofit that filed for bankruptcy.County Executive Jeff Smith confirmed the possibility of an expansion — but he, along with the county supervisors, declined to offer specifics. One possibility is ...
