For millions of years the Earth has absorbed excess carbon dioxide through its forests, oceans and rivers — that is until human activities threw that natural cycle out of balance.Scientists have long worked to tip the scales back and slow the warming of the planet, but now with government grants, goals and tax incentives, some of the nation’s largest energy producers are also looking at ways to capture harmful carbon and safely store it far below the planet’s surface before it ever gets into the atmosphere. One such test project is happening now at Calpine’s Los Medanos Energy Center in the East Bay. On Friday, Calpine, which bills itself as the nation’s largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources, unveiled its first-ever carbon capture demonstration pilot at its Pittsburg facility that will test new technology that could capture nearly all of its carbon emissions.“Today is representative of the environmental progress that’s always been a part of ...‘I’m already good at racial profiling’: New batch of Antioch cops’ texts show how much racism and policing intertwined

ANTIOCH — The latest batch of text messages by Antioch police officers to go public leaves little doubt about how much their self-professed racism seeped into their day-to-day law enforcement work, further underscoring just how damaging to the justice system this widening scandal has become.A new document containing 128 pages of offensive communications between officers, filed in court Friday, contains racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism, between officers exchanging words not after their shifts, but during the course of their jobs. The messages make it clear officers factored in residents’ race while on patrol. They discuss targeting Black and Latino people, make light of a Black man being fatally shot hours earlier, call a Middle Eastern man a “terrorist” just minutes after arresting him and refer to their own police chief, who is Black, as a “gorilla.”“I’m already good at racial profiling,” Officer Eric Rombough texted Officer Jonath...San Jose: One dead in Highway 87 collision

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) — Rory McIlroy made just enough birdie putts for a 3-under 67 in increasingly windy conditions Saturday to keep his one-shot lead over Tom Kim in the Genesis Scottish Open.McIlroy still didn’t make as many as he expected, a common refrain for most players, though he has raw numbers supporting him. One day after missing nine putts from 10 feet or closer, he missed an eagle attempt from just over 3 feet and a birdie putt from 5 feet as he was trying to build a cushion at The Renaissance Club.“I’m still in a really good position,” McIlroy said. “As I said, I feel like I’ve left a few out there. But I mean, it’s hard to be disappointed when you’re in the lead going into the final day. I’ll certainly take it.”McIlroy was at 13-under 197 as he bids for his first professional victory in Scotland. He has never finished in the top 10 in seven previous tries as a pro, and he has three runner-up finishes in the Dunhill Links. He has fo...Civil rights leader Rev.
