Ohio House votes to mandate defibrillators in schools, sports venues after collapse of Bills' Hamlin

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:46:20 GMT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs, could be placed in nearly every school or sports and recreation venue in Ohio under a proposal that cleared the Republican-dominated House Wednesday with overwhelming bipartisan support. The legislation, sparked by the sudden cardiac arrest of Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin in January on the field during a football game in Cincinnati, would require that all public schools, municipally-owned sports and recreation locations such as gymnasiums and swimming pools, and some private schools have on-site AEDs. It cleared the chamber on an 84-6 vote.Current Ohio law allows school districts to require AEDs on site, but it's an elective decision that's left to individual districts.State Rep. Adam Bird of New Richmond, one of the bill's sponsors, said he's confident many districts already have AEDs, but making it a requirement can help further protect students. Under the bill, employees would be required to undergo special tra...

(AP) — The parents of a 6-year-old girl who drowned at a popular Kansas City water park last year allege in a lawsuit that the park repeatedly hires young, inexperienced lifeguards and does not adequately train them.Therron and Debra Stewart, of Grandview, Missouri, filed the lawsuit against Oceans of Fun and its parent company, Cedar Fair. If you want to sit Jamal Murray at David Thompson’s table, the Skywalker’s more than happy to scoot over to make room.“I think his legend is still growing,” Thompson, arguably the greatest guard in Nuggets history, told me when I’d asked him recently about Murray, the first point guard to lead Denver to an NBA championship. “It’s coming.“Yeah, it’s coming. And he’s gonna be right there. (When) he’s healthy, he’s as good as anybody.”Game recognizes game.Nikola Jokic, basketball king of the world, was already dancing on Mount Olympus when the NBA playoffs started. The last eight weeks simply affirmed the Joker’s immortality, all while stuffing sweaty gym socks into the haters’ stammering pie holes. But with apologies to Aaron Gordon, Mr. Nugget, Man of the People, nobody’s star on the Nuggets roster has shot faster and brighter since mid-April than the Blue Arrow’s.Murray didn’t just shoot his way into the convo of best Nuggets guard ever. Activists say Benito the giraffe is struggling in Mexico zoo

By Mark Stevenson | Associated PressMEXICO CITY — Benito the giraffe arrived in Mexico’s arid northern border city of Ciudad Juarez just last month, and already the climate appears to be a problem — and he’s only had to deal with the scorching heat of summer. The snow and freezing temperatures of winter are still to come, and animal activists are up in arms and pushing a campaign under the hashtag “Save Benito” seeking to have the animal moved somewhere more hospitable. On a recent day, the 3-year-old male giraffe could be seen crouching with only its head under a small, circular canopy for shade. The structure did little to protect him from a pelting rain and a hail storm later. There is also a small shed for winter, but activists say it is cruel for the city-run Central Park to keep the giraffe in a small fenced enclosure, by himself, with only about a half acre to wander and few trees to nibble, in a climate he’s not used to.“We have been fighting...

Major investments are coming to Prince George’s. Is there reason to worry?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:46:20 GMT

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks took the stage in a ballroom at a College Park, Maryland, hotel on Wednesday, speaking for nearly 30 minutes about how much money had poured into the county over the last year — about what one would expect in the annual speech, dubbed the “State of the Economy.”It was a chance to brag to the local business community about the “over $1 billion of investments along our Blue Line corridor,” as well as how the “redevelopment at Cheverly unlocks a billion dollars in private investment,” after the old Prince George’s Hospital Center is demolished over the coming months. The county hopes to see significant amounts of work on that project conducted by small, minority-owned businesses based in the county, which would have the opportunity to buy into the project and share some of the profits in the future.“Everything we’ve done on economic development also has an eye toward equity,” Alsobrooks said after the speech. With that...
